According to legend, Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, rose from the waves in this strikingly beautiful spot. The Greek name, Petra tou Romiou (The Rock of the Greek), is associated with the legendary frontier-guard of Byzantine times, Dighenis Akritas, who kept the marauding Saracens at bay with amazing strength. It is said in one such fight he heaved a large rock (Petra), at his enemy.

This unusual rock formation standing in the shallow sea beside the Limassol- Paphos highway must be the most famous spot in Cyprus.

 It is here that Aphrodite is supposed to have emerged and set foot on earth for the first time. 
 

According to another tradition it is mentioned that during ancient times the shore of Petra tou Romiou was named Achni. Many believe that the name originates from a paraphrase of the name "Achaie" (Achaeans) and is associated with the shore where the Achaeans landed during their return from the Trojan war.

In the region of Petra tou Romiou, legend, tradition, unsparing natural beauty, the sun, the sea, and the blue colour of the sky play between them and create a very dream-like scene.
